Physical independence isn't built on a treadmill or a court. It's built on physical reserve.
Think about what your body must do in real life. Haul a loaded cooler across soft sand. Hoist a suitcase into an overhead bin. Get yourself back onto a paddleboard. Catch your balance when you slip on a wet dock.
And sometimes life asks much more of us than that.
Recovery determines how quickly you bounce back after a workout. Strength determines how much physical capacity you have available.
Muscle Is More Than a ‘Beach Body’: Your Biological Checking Account
In our culture, muscle is often treated as something mostly related to appearance. But muscle is active tissue that plays an important role in metabolism, supports and stabilizes your joints, and gives you something that's easy to take for granted when you have plenty of it: physical reserve.
Age-related changes in muscle can begin surprisingly early, often starting in our thirties. In medicine, significant age-related muscle loss is called sarcopenia. It doesn't happen overnight, and long before it becomes a medical diagnosis, you may simply notice that you're not quite as strong as you used to be.
Think of your muscle mass as your checking account:
· Daily Transactions: Walking stairs, carrying groceries, gardening, and enjoying sports.
· Emergency Withdrawals: An injury, surgery, illness, or unexpected medical treatment.
When your physical reserve is high, everyday life doesn't require much of what's in the account, leaving you more to draw on when something unexpected happens.
The goal of strength training isn't to build a bodybuilder's physique. It's to make sure your physical capacity stays comfortably ahead of the demands you place on it.
Give Muscle a Reason to Stay: Functional Strength Training
A common frustration we hear in our practice sounds like this: "I play tennis three times a week, why am I losing strength?"
Tennis, golf, walking, cycling and other recreational activities are excellent for your heart, mood, endurance and overall health. But being active doesn't necessarily give your muscles enough of a reason to stay strong.
Muscle costs your body energy to maintain. If you don't give your body a clear reason to keep it, it slowly lets it go. That's the truth behind "use it or lose it." But our tennis player is using her muscles, several hours a week. The problem is that using a muscle isn't the same as challenging it.
Think about what happens when you first take up a new sport. The first few times you play, muscles you didn't even know you had suddenly announce themselves the next morning. But keep playing, and your body figures it out. The same game that once challenged you becomes familiar. Your body gets more efficient at doing it, which is exactly what it's designed to do.
The problem is that your muscles are very practical. They don't keep extra strength around just in case you might need it someday. You must keep giving them a reason.
To maintain or build strength, your muscles need to be asked to do more than they're accustomed to. That might mean a more difficult movement, a heavier weight, or an entirely new activity that challenges you in a different way. As you get stronger, the challenge grows with you. That's really all we mean by progressive strength training.
Gym-phobia? Resistance bands, body-weight exercises, Pilates, and free weights can all challenge muscle. What matters is finding something you can do safely and consistently, while continuing to challenge yourself as you get stronger. For many people, a qualified personal trainer is a great place to start because the program can be built around your body and personal goals.
Strength Is More Than Size
It's easy to assume that bigger muscles automatically mean more strength. Muscle size is part of the story, but so is how well your brain and nerves tell those muscles when to fire, how hard to work, and in what order.
Think of an orchestra. Your muscles are the musicians, and your nervous system is the conductor. You can fill the stage with talented players, but they still need to come in at the right moment and work together to make music.
Your body works much the same way. Strength isn't just producing force. It's being able to control that force when you push, pull, lift, balance, change direction, or react quickly. Your brain and muscles get better at working together by practicing movements that require them to do exactly that.
That's why good strength training isn't only about making muscles bigger, and why I'm a big fan of functional fitness. Quite simply, functional strength training asks a different question: What do I need to do today so I can still do the things I want to do 10, 20, or 30 years from now?
In daily life, that kind of strength shows up in all sorts of ways:
· Stopping and changing direction. Being able to slow down, stop, and change direction on the tennis court while staying balanced and in control.
· Grip and carrying. Holding on to heavy bags, tools, or a wriggling grandchild.
· Sitting to standing: Getting up from a low beach chair without a struggle.
QUICK TIP: Check Your Functional Fitness Place a sturdy dining chair without arms against a wall. Sit with your feet flat on the floor and your arms crossed over your chest. Set a timer for 30 seconds, then stand all the way up and sit back down as many times as you can without using your hands. Write down your number. That's your starting point. Repeat the test every few months. The point isn't to compete with anyone else's number. You're watching your number over time. |
Your Bone Strength Is Part of the Equation
There's another benefit to strength training worth mentioning: your muscles aren't the only tissue responding. Your bones are too.
Picture your skeleton as a building with a very frugal maintenance crew. That crew works around the clock, quietly removing old bone and laying down new. And like any crew watching a budget, it pays attention to what's being used. Put regular load on a structure and there's a reason to reinforce it. Take that load away and there's less reason to maintain it.
Your bones work the same way. They aren't a fixed frame you were handed at 25. They're living tissue that responds to what you ask of it.
Walking, tennis, and other activities certainly load parts of your skeleton, but they don't challenge your bones in all the same ways that resistance training can. This becomes especially important for women around menopause, when bone loss can speed up without producing a single symptom. You don't feel bone thinning. That's exactly what makes it so easy to ignore.

For this conversation, the point is simpler: when you build strength, you're investing in more than muscle.
Recognize Baseline Shifts: The Medical Bridge
If you're training consistently, eating well, and staying active, but your strength is still slipping, your recovery is taking longer, or your stamina isn't what it was, don't assume the answer is simply to work harder.
Difficulty building or holding onto muscle isn't always a training problem. Thyroid dysfunction, hormone changes, chronic inflammation, certain medications, and nutritional deficiencies can all affect muscle, strength, and recovery.
This raises a different question: Is something getting in the way? If you're doing the work and not seeing the results you would expect, that's a conversation worth having with your physician.
The Bottom Line
Strength isn't about gym culture or building a beach body. It's about having enough physical reserve to keep saying yes to the things you want to do.
That may mean playing tennis three times a week, carrying your own gear to the beach, traveling without worrying about the suitcase, or picking up that wriggling grandchild. What matters to you will be different from what matters to someone else. That's the point of functional fitness.
Train for the life you want to keep living. And if you happen to become the club tennis champion along the way, that's not a bad bonus.
